The Getting Things Done® methodology (‘GTD’ for short) is a way of working that can make you 15-25% more productive at work, and much more able to switch off away at home. It has become the gold standard of personal productivity and effectiveness over the last 20 years and is used by some of the world’s highest performing individuals and best-known organisations.
I’ve taught senior leaders and their teams in organisations such as KPMG, Co-op, Open University, Toyota, Scania, Monzo, Barclays, Nestlé, Screwfix, Lufthansa and KFC. I have a Masters degree in Coaching and Mentoring and I’m also one of a small number of coaches worldwide who are certified to teach GTD® virtually.

The Getting Things Done® methodology (‘GTD®’ for short) is the gold standard of personal productivity and is used by some of the world’s highest performing individuals and best-known organisations. It has been developed and refined over nearly 50 years of work and helps people dramatically improve their focus, productivity and wellbeing. (People who use GTD® report that it makes them feel up to 25% more productive.)
Based on the writings of New York Times best-selling author David Allen, GTD® is a comprehensive and systematic way of managing everything that’s coming at you in work and life so that you get more of the right things done, in less time AND with less stress (which most people think is not only impossible but also contradictory). It also enables you to shut off from your work when that’s called for, so you can spend focussed quality time with your friends and families without work distractions.
1-to-1 GTD virtual coaching is the most effective way of implementing GTD because it is totally focussed on you, your work and your tools. Virtual coaching will give you a deep understanding of how to make GTD work for you and establish lasting behaviour changes to keep it going for optimum long term effect.
Virtual coaching is usually delivered in 60-90 minutes sessions via Teams or Zoom and the big benefit is that you can spend as much time as you want in between the sessions building your GTD system and practice then getting feedback in the sessions, constantly refining along the way and making the new habits ‘stick’. The most popular format for virtual coaching is an 8 session package delivered over 2-3 months.
The difference between in-person and virtual is speed v depth (In-person is quicker, virtual goes deeper), although the decision should also take into account your preferred learning style and scheduling constraints, too.
Whether you choose virtual or in-person, the aim is always to achieve what you set out to achieve with the coaching and ensure that you’re able to “fly solo” with it.
The content of GTD coaching is based on what you want to achieve but here are some common elements for someone who wants to implement all the core aspects of the methodology;
choosing the right tools for your new GTD system
implementing GTD inbox processsing to reduce distraction and improve focus and prioritisation
building a complete projects list to drive strategic work, prioritisation and balance
setting up effective tools for delegation and tracking with individuals and teams
implementing the GTD Weekly Review to sustain and evolve your GTD practice over time, to reduce stress and to improve your weekends
learning frameworks for effective prioritisation once you are using the GTD methodology
using higher order GTD frameworks for long term planning and direction
If you’d like to find out more about GTD coaching then let’s arrange a chat. Usually it takes 15-20 minutes to see if we’re a good fit (based on where you’re starting from, what you want to achieve, how quickly you want to achieve it and what you want to spend). If we agree that we are a good fit then we’ll arranged a second call to analyse your current way of working and generate a specific proposal for what the coaching will cover. Then it’s over you to decide if you want to go ahead.
